Cold and frosty morning

This morning there was a fairly hard frost in London; I went to stand on the fire escape at the back of our house to admire it and was just in time to see the sun rise over the rooftops. Morning is very atmospheric here in winter – few birds sing and there is an apparent stillness, but concentrate a little and the roar of a vast city can be heard beyond the silent gardens.
I don’t often look back at my old posts but something made me do so today and I was surprised and a little touched to see that I had pretty much looked at and written about a similar scene (almost to the day) of a midwinter dawn last December. Little rituals; the steaming cup held in both hands against the cold, breathing in the sharp frosty air, the lemony dawn sky.

I love morning rituals as well…it is morning here in NC and I havent yet gotten my first cup of coffee…but your post has made me want to venture out of my warm bed for a warm cup…
thanks for sharing your london photo…I lived in UK for a year and didnt want to leave,,,,I just adored it there…
I am another morning person! Up with the dawn, or before everyday. I love to see the sunrise and that first cup of coffee- yum! Great picture!
@Dawn Fine:- welcome! Oh yes I have to have my morning cup, first tea, then coffee. And winter dawns are so beautiful wherever you are, plus you don’t have to be up so early to see ‘em. Hope you are enjoying your cuppa – glad to know you enjoyed your visit here too
…oh yes, and I just noticed – don’t you have the most appropriate name?
@Dee:- hello Dee! I never used to be a morning person, I had to train myself and now I love to see the dawn – but that first cup is still an absolute necessity!
It is very atmospheric, your photo makes me feel quite cold! Here in Shropshire it is not so quiet, the crows and magpies are going nuts in a morning right now…
@Chrissy:-ahh, the sweet sweet call of the magpie! And the lovely voice of the crow…yes, they are deafening, aren’t they
They visit our street mid afternoon, and often have battles (which the magpies have been losing of late). Sometimes in the morning we get a wren, which is lovely.
Beautiful! Nothing goes better with a cup of coffee than a frosty morning. (‘Cept maybe a frosty morning and a fresh, steaming hot scone.)
These days, I am so NOT a morning person. It just doesn’t fit our family’s schedule, not to mention that I still have to get up at night to tend a baby, and I am TIRED. LOL!
Sometimes I can imagine a time when I will be up with the dawn. It’s such a lovely time of day.
@Kit:- Oh, now I want a scone with strawberry jam, my stomach is growling for it
I feel like such a fraud; dawn arrives at about eight o’clock at this time of year in southern UK so it isn’t really so very early in the picture. But seeing the day in like that still feels virtuous somehow
The broken sleep of motherhood is something I can’t quite imagine, I’m hoping that as the little ‘uns get bigger you’ll get more sleep to suit your body clock and maybe catch a daybreak or two.
How bee-u-tee-ful! I love the wisps of blue behind the clouds and the frosty feel of it all. And I’m jealous—a fire escape? I love them! I read your post from a year ago and can see you scampering around on it and keeping your balance on the ice to feed the birds. How nice. Your mention above of a “steaming cup held in both hands” reminds me so much of a good friend in San Francisco, CA. We used to work together here in the East and at work, on cold mornings, she would hold her cup exactly like that. W and I still think back about our time with her when we’re holding our own steaming cups. You always touch on matters so close to my heart…I love that!

“Lemony dawn sky” — what a beautiful description and nothing like I’ve heard or read before.
I posted last week about results of a quiz to decide if you’re a morning, night, etc. person. The link is at the top. It seems you already know you are a morning person, but the quiz is fun…(I’m an afternoon person).
@roadgurl5:- there is nothing more companionable than a nice hot brew with friends on a cold morning is there? Tea, coffee, so long as it’s hot and good I don’t mind which. I’m really glad I reminded you of your old friend
@Lydia:- Thank you Lydia! The colour of the sky just reminded me of cloudy lemon juice, I often see the world in terms of “can I eat it or drink it” and sometimes that just slips out in my writing
I’m kind of a morning person by accident, my body clock is more owl than lark but I have to get up early to make sure everything is done and I’ve learned the pleasure of dawn rising grudgingly…but it has to be said, I have learned well!
I saw a cloudy lemon juice sky, almost a year ago over Manchester. I sometimes get up really early and (the next day I get up really late
I also love the distant roar of city traffic (as long as I’m well away fron it)

Welcome back to skywatch, Bird. Lovely photo, and I quite agree about the importance of ritual in daily life.
Pretty sky! I love the compliment of yellow & blue.
Wow excellent shot of the night sky, and feels cold, lol.
Anna
Love your meadow backgroud. I too am an early riser, usually befor the first tweet of the birds. Delight in sunrises any time of year. I love a good frosty sunrise, usually with a camea rather than a cup of tea.
Happy SkyWatching.
waw…very pretty cute sky there….
keep posting
have a nice day
