Belated Happy New Year…

…I know it’s late but I’ve barely sat still for the last six weeks or so, so I hope you’ll forgive me. Coming soon I have some pictures of the incredible freak weather southern England has been experiencing. But for now, just to remind us that spring really will be on it’s way sooner than you think, I’d like to introduce you to Ms Fox. She’s making the most impressive racket in our back gardens right now as she calls to Mr Fox all night and all day, sometimes a hushed  “yip yip yip”, but more and more often a window rattling scream that would test the strongest nerves. I caught her going about her morning routine, patrolling the neighbourhood fences and walls in search of breakfast.

Welcome back and Happy New Year, Bird—you were missed! Hope the holidays were good to you. :o )

Ms Fox is so cute and it’s amazing that you caught her with your camera. We have a fox (or foxes) that run through our yard now and then but they’re too fast and it doesn’t help that Lucy goes nuts barking when they pass through.

Looking forward to your weather photos…”talk” to ya later! :o )

Hi Holly, it’s good to be back! The foxes around here are pretty confident but wily Ms Fox was out of there pretty quickly when she saw me, so I had to just snatch those photos. I do have an ambition to take some decent shots of her some day soon. The winter pics are coming, two whole posts worth! Thanks for coming to visit “over here” despite the recent lack of action :)

When I read fox as a totem animal, it brings focus on diplomacy and cunning. Perhaps she is reminding you to be diplomatic, or to know when to speak and when to be silent? We very rarely spot them around here, but when we have it’s usually a timely reminder.

In any case, I enjoyed the pictures. Here, the night patrol is housecats, rabbits, ‘possum and the occasional owl.

    Happy New Year!

  4. And belated HNY to you to, Bird! Foxes are rumored to exist in my neighborhood, though 20+ years in this house and no such luck. I’ll try to remain optimistic as the neighbors pave over their gardens…

@Kit:- Oh Kit, there’s a thought! I do believe in diplomacy and tact and aspire to those qualities…as to how well I do is not for me to say :D

Hi Bird ~ Naturally I love Ms Fox! After my ‘research’ on Foxy, the best food you could leave out would be a dozen hen’s heads, and perhaps a few whole chickens from the butchers.

It’s a great shot, all hunched and going over

Thanks for your good wishes on my broadcast

    Here’s to a great 2009

@lostinlandscape:- the paving over problem is similar here, sadly few of the front gardens on our street are anything but carport prairies now, the back gardens are being increasingly squeezed as far as wildlife is concerned as well. :(

@soulmerlin:- hello Henry, hope your show’s been doing well! (and I hope you have been doing well too for that matter:)

I thought Ms foxy would have a particular charm for you, in fact it was remiss of me not to link to your article. I will have to remedy this. I have thought on occasion of feeding the foxes, but in a very built up area like ours, it has its drawbacks. Among them, a liking for similar foods by another familiar resident in our street – Ms Rat and her family! And I have to admit after being veggie for several years I’d be squeamish about the chicken heads. Hopefully Ms Fox will do well on her current diet of mice, rats, worms, discarded takeaways and the occasional stolen bowl of cat food :)
