Nosey Neighbour

I work mostly from home, and I’ve noticed that when I go to the kitchen for my mid afternoon snack I will sometimes have an gimlet eyed audience peering at me through the kitchen window from next door’s roof – particularly if said meal is bread based. Mostly it’s feral pigeons regarding my sandwich with envious eyes, cocking their heads from side to side and shuffling about with muted excitement, but this time it was a juvenile wood pigeon and it didn’t miss a single bite. I’ve never fed them, but obviously they’ve come to associate humans with food and this allows them to live in hope.

A beautiful photo! Thanks. Here in upstate New York, we have everyday pigeons (Rock Doves) and Mourning Doves, but I’ve never seen a Wood Dove. But, you know what? Even everyday pigeons are gorgeous when beheld with an unbiased eye — such beautiful iridescence and pretty pink feet.
Jackie, I so agree with you, pigeons and doves are lovely birds. They are regarded as vermin here in town and country but I just see beautiful and entertaining creatures. We also have rock doves, which now makes me wonder… did they originate with you or with us? We don’t get mourning doves but I have seen pictures and they are really very beautiful.
A feral bird. I hadn’t heard that term before..It kind of cute though…
The feral pigeons are descendants of tame birds who escaped and reverted to the wild; their ancestors would have been racing or messenger birds, or kept for the pot. Even further back, they would have been wild rock doves, so they’ve kind of come full circle
What a great shot! It’s always fun to meet pigeons, especially in the city where they’re accustomed to human contact. So brave! We don’t have much contact with them out here in the country, but they’re always one of the creatures we’re on the lookout for when we drive in to town. This one looks so plush and comfortable!
Plush is the word!
The wood pigeons are by far the prettiest kind you’ll see regularly in London. They used to be strictly country birds but in the UK over the last decade or so they’ve lost their shyness and moved into urban areas in increasing numbers.
My desk and computer at home are under a window in the kitchen (its a big kitchen) and there’s lots of lovely green things to look out on. And I love it when I get little feathered visitors that come to play and rest in the greenery. Makes my day
I wish ours looked out onto some greenery Svasti – all I have is that roof and the pigeons. Sometimes it’s enlivened by a crow or magpie, but the smaller birds don’t come close. Still, I enjoy the pigeons company – they are so funny!
What a great pic. This is one smart pigeon. Aw c’mon, Bird, give a fellow bird a break and make its dreams come true! (Beautiful sky, by the way.)

Holly, it’s tempting but I doubt R would thank me if I filled the kitchen with pigeons, I have no doubt that they would come in through the window if they could only find the nerve
