Sky in the water

What’s wrong with these pictures? Unless you live on Pandora you don’t often get to see land floating through the sky! It’s been raining here in London almost non stop for the last couple of weeks, so on one of the few fine days last week I took my chance to go for a stroll in Finsbury Park. The huge expanses of grass that act as spontaneous football pitches in better weather were saturated in standing water and acted as natural reflecting pools. I took these photos of trees and sky reflected in the water and turned them upside down – as you can see from the image below.

What fascinating and intriguing photos! Greetings from Italy via Skywatch.

    Great skies, very interesting compositions!

    • Bird says:

Thank you Larry! I just stopped by your blog but can’t comment as I’m not on Blogger – will try to set up an open id thingy so that I can :)

Very pretty and unusual shots—clever! By what month will the standing water be gone?

    • Bird says:

Thank you Pat! I am very much hoping it will be gone soon – it’s unusual for this land to be under water and shows just how much rain we are getting right now. We have a lot of standing water in London at the moment and I would not be surprised if we get flooding in some parts if the weather continues to be this bad.

Hi Bird ~ Great shots and a ‘seeing’ eye to see the photo-opportunity. I took a shot like this way back when I was around 16yrs, of Durham Cathedral reflected in the river Wear…the water was like glass and gave a perfect reflection. I hope I’ll find the 35mm slide someday – my life is scattered around England in Archive boxes and bin-liners..so hopefully it will turn up someday.

(at least my laptop seems to have survived inversion!)

That sounds like a beautiful photo Henry, it’s interesting isn’t it how when you’ve taken a good one it stays in your mind forever no matter how many other photos you take. It’s fun just to use a camera as practice in keeping your eye fresh sometimes which is what these pics are, they are no great shakes technically I’m sad to say :)

I hope your photographic collection finds it’s way home to you from it’s various boxes and bags – I lost a great deal of mine with moving around and I still pine for it sometimes. But I console myself with the thought that there are always lots more photos in the future just waiting to be taken.

…It was either that or standing on my head :)

It’s a good job you have a laptop then Henry! If I tried to turn my huge old computer screen upside down I’d probably do myself an injury :D

Wonderful reflections of the sky! Great shots.

Bird hope all is well, and you got lots of rain? We finally got snow, every kind dry, wet and melting one. Nice pics. Anna :)

    • Bird says:

It never seems to stop raining for more than an hour here, Anna! I am very grateful that the landlord mended our leaky roof otherwise we’d be drowning right now. I hope you are not being too snowed in… at least snow is beautiful but it certainly can outstay it’s welcome :D

Great shots. I love doing that, myself…flipping reflection photos upside down. I have one on my blog (from a while ago now,) here; http://lucidflora.blogspot.com/2008/04/on-remembering-dreams.html

Great shots although I am getting very tired of the rain……….The only good thing is that I planted loads of things in my garden last week, I think I can now call them well watered in, lol. At least the sky is blue in your rainy images, I must have missed that ;-)

    • Bird says:

It’s been fairly nice here this week, although very cold… hope the rain has stopped for you too, it gets a bit trying after a week of non stop waterlogging…and I hope your gardening didn’t get washed away!

Bird, I’m glad you explained because I was completely confused…couldn’t figure out which end was up! But that’s a beautiful reflection…I especially like that last shot. And I hope your rains stop soon…hmmm, seeing how I arrived here days late, you may already be drying out!

    • Bird says:

It’s much nicer here now Holly, but there is still so much standing water with nowhere to go… I have to say, having not looked at these pics for a few days they are now making me feel a bit dizzy – more effective than I’d realised :D

  11. Goo says:

Now you’ve got me feeling thourougly disoriented! (It doesn’t take much!) Fabulous pics though and I really like that you make the most of otherwise dull weather conditions to compose such great images.

    • Bird says:

Thank you Goo, I had bad cabin fever last week and this was the only decent day for going out and taking photographs, I was so relieved to be outside that even huge puddles were beautiful :D

Very cool! I love reflective shots!
