Thank you for your comment Goo. We see it here every day, things of value taken away while billboards selling the latest tech and trainers proliferate. Add that to the cynical greedy nature of those in power who steal with impunity... politicians haven't got a clue, and basically do not care. But there is community here, it's the good people who live here and get on with making things better in their neighbourhood who give cause for hope.

I'm glad you wrote this. I feel so sorry that we are about to demonize yet another generation of young people who already had very little to look forward to. The gap between rich and poor continues to grow, and there is plenty of evidence to suggest social exclusion on this level will affect all members of a society adversely. The values of our consumer economy are coming home to roost. Why should poor people, or indeed anybody, behave any better than our wealthy leaders?

Hi Chrissy, thank you so much for saying this - I was unsure about posting an opinion piece but the longer I left it the more it felt like I had to really. I haven't really done much of anything so far towards helping, there are those who have done nothing else for days, dropping their lives to try and do something, the community on the ground has been phenomenal and all pulled together. Seeing pictures of familiar buildings going up in flames (they only re-opened the High Road a day or two ago so I haven't yet seen the aftermath) was terrifying and heartbreaking. I was scared that people might think I condoned the fires and violence against people when I wrote this, but I'm not looking to excuse. Just trying to see why. Thank you for getting it and writing to tell me so.

I don't live there but I know what you are saying! Well done you because I know that you have been out most of the week helping those that were made homeless. Emotionally this week has rendered me exhausted and I cannot imagine how much worse it would be if it were my neighbourhood. I also know how hypocrital some of this is, those politicans decrying looters after embezzling thousands from the public purse and then they expect morals! But, hey no-one got hurt in all of that so that's ok (for readers in other countries, that is sarcasm btw ;) ) I hated the riots and the terrible scenes, my heart bled for those that got caught up in it BUT, through it all I reckon I despise the government more! It is that "I am alright Jack" attitude that is pervading society and I really fear for the future...... No more politics from me for a while either... :)
